These lamps provide the highest efficacy (ratio of light emitted to power consumed), and therefore the lowest operating cost of all light sources.The characteristic yellow colour has significant advantages in applications such as road lighting and security lighting, because the human eye achieves higher visual activity under this particular monochromatic light than under a similar low level of white light.
